VAP prevention
What is VAP?
VAP (ventilator associated pneumonia) is a major concern in today's modern hospitals. 90% of pneumonias in ICU are VAP and studies suggest that 1 out of 4 ICU infections is VAP. Not only does this increase ICU stay by 4-6 days, but each case of VAP may cost the hospital as much as €30,000 per patient.
Fight it, control it, prevent it with Oral Care
A combination of oral care treatments in a proper oral care protocol means hospitals can effectively prevent oropharyngeal bacterial biofilm build-up. This in turn leads to a reduction of VAP and aspiration pneumonias and greatly reduces the associated treatment costs.
Oral care helps eliminate plaque and bacteria
Plaque protects the bacteria within it from antibiotics, anti-microbials and host defence mechanisms. Application of a bactericidal mouthwash or antiseptic will only be effec- tive on the free-floating bacteria in the oral cavity. In order to reach the bacteria in the biofilm, this needs to be manually broken up by a toothbrushing action.
